I've had the Bass PODxt and Behringer's Bass Vamp rack mountable...

If you want an actual unit that you can easily carry around with you (like for gigging or going over to your girlfriend's house to show off your chops) I'd recommend the Behringer... it just sounded better than the PODxt to me.

But... my favorite for bass emulation is my Line 6 Toneport UX2 (which also can be used as an audio in for recording) and then purchase the "Bass Expansion Pack". You can use the setup for guitar as well since it is loaded with guitar modeling as well.

Downside is that you are slaved to your computer which it all runs on. Think
