I need some info on recording mics. What do i really need to bring out the vocals and instuments for recording. We borrowed a bluebird a couple weeks ago and were amazed with the results , but there not in our budget. Any help would be appreciated. Dont really want to spend more than 2 or 3 hundred on a couple of mics.

I have one of these:

Great mic for the money, and you have the option of selecting three different patterns and some other stuff. It has done a great job recording my acoustic guitar and I use it on about 90 percent of my recorded vocals.

I also have one of these: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/AKG-Perception-420-Condenser-Microphone?sku=271292

Don't be put off by the price. They do a pretty good job for the money, and a lot of guys I deal with over at Indie Music Works use these exclusively for recording. If you think you like the MXL, but want to be able to select different patterns, consider this one:

Thanks Paul - We bought a MXL 4000 with the pencil mic a couple weeks ago , and are very happy with it . That mic is as big as a 24 oz beer can. It's a big difference recording with it. And what a good deal from Musicians Friend
