What's the best converter? What do you use?

Mainly wav to mp3...but I'd like to be able to convert other files as well. And mp3 to wav, etc.

Most decent recording software will do that.

Dunno if it's free, but it can be found easily and is very reliable: dB PowerAmp Music Converter should show up in a Google search. I had good experiences with that program when I used it.

I currently use WinFF and I know that's a free one. I use it for whatever Adobe Audition won't handle.

A buddy just turned me on to this: FreeMake Video Converter.

http://www.freemake.com/

It does a LOT of cool stuff (including converting music files) and is free. Very cool. I've been using it this afternoon converting music files.

Seriously, this is a cool program that does a LOT for it to be free. I'm surprised they don't charge.

I use VLC media player for converting or compressing audio and video files. Audacity works well for converting audio since you can see the waveform and cut out excess parts. Both are free.

I had VLC media player on another computer once and it kept trying to take over my system so I don't use it anymore.

I've got Audacity but couldn't convert to MP3 because I don't have the LAME codec and didn't want to get it because I've had trouble with it before too.

In both cases it was probably user error Mr. Green but I just didn't want to mess with it again.

Digital Media Converter is a good free audio video converter software that also converts every type of media file. No adware, and completely virus free. Supports almost any file format and it is a fast converter. Should make quick work of your conversions.

I use Audacity. It also has the capability to capture audio from Youtube. I use it to make my ringtones for both my wife's iPhone and my Moto G phone. It will export to MP3, has a good mixer and can also normalize a tune's levels. It too is free and down loadable.
