Hi All,

It seems the free ride is over! Embarassed

Well, at the end of this month, my free verizon web space, which has been uneditable for a couple of years, is about to go bye bye. Verizon is killing all web space. I do have all of the appropriate files on my machine, and would just have to change all of the web page links to have whatever host root name gets used. I've known this for a while, but just procrastinated.

Anyway, I've had several incarnations over many years with this total hack website for my Carvin Guitars - linked to here, and on my main Carvin site sig line. It started in Yahoo Geochitties, that went away, then I got Verizon Fios, with free web space, and a few years back they removed FTP access (for security purposes) so I couldnt update the pages, now they're killing the whole deal, like I mentioned. *boohoo*

So is there something thats good, and cheap, that I can just (secure) ftp my file changes to? I hate having to use any sort of dictated html editor - at least if the only files I can have are the ones created by these editors (like "V" enforced).

Thanks.

I don't know about cheap, but I use Web Hosting Pad. I go for the very basic of their offerings. This keeps my cost down. If you already have your Domain Name then you should be good to go. Otherwise, you will also have to get that. I think they offer that service as well.

Thanks Brian, I'll check into that. I'd need a domain name, as I've always used what was given to me by the free hosts. Thats just the root directory / html that'll need to change in the inter-page links.

So what did you end up doing? I just changed hosting companies. Went from Web Hosting Pad to Nearly Free Speech (nearlyfreespeech.net). They will host and let you register a DNS. Pricing is very interesting. They charge pennys for storage and bandwidth utilization.

Check them out if you still haven't found anything.

Thanks for the info. ... I, uh, let it go bye bye for now. Embarassed
My old original main email provider (attglobal) that I've had since early '97 Shocked is scheduled to be deactivated by March next year. I just called them and they said to hold on to my current email @ and they're preparing a migration to a new provider, which will be cheaper!! Smile
I checked some of their options out, and it may provide some web space and ftp access for my html files. For a very reasonable price ... less than just email right now anyway. So ... I'm considering that direction.
It might not be the best, but it may combine my original email @ and web space dilemma in 1 package. So I'm holding out until next year. Even if they just give me some dummy domain (like Verizon did), I don't care, I can live with that and just bookmark a link.
I have the files on my machine, and would just need to bulk-change all the root url links. And there aren't too many of them, so that's good.

The only problem with NFS is no email server. But if you use Gmail or Yahoo or some other provider you should be fine.

Good luck.

Thanks.

If nothing else, this got me off my azz and updated my guitar and amp gear sets in the HTML I keep on my computer. Just more of the same, but it came out nice (with the purple CT and gunmetal ST300, and added my Blue PRS CU22). Its good having some time off to do this.
Now just waiting for ATT to come through ... or look elsewhere, like you mentioned.

Lets see if this works (couldn't get 'em all in 1 screen) -

TCM limits the size of images. I am sure your HTML will show much better. Whenever you get your page up, let me know.

As of last weekend I FINALLY got my web site out of limbo and back amongst the living! For $10/month I went with AT&T web services and got my own domain (stawickidstuff.com). I've had it for about a month already, but finally got the files copied over and modified most of the links (some of the Carvin links, especially amp-related, may be dead, sorry.)

The main url is
http://stawickidstuff.com/Gear/Carvin.html

Nothing too fancy, just my stuff. A couple of years in the waiting.
