I turned her on yesterday, first time in a long time. Came up, plugged in guitar, then it made a loud noise and the sound went.

Turned off and back on, now when it warms up, if I turn off and back on, it goes nuts.

This is only in TRIODE mode. I can switch off and on in NORMAL mode and none of this.

Can this just be tubes? If yes, would I replace the two EL84's or the three 12AX7 tubes to start?

I called Carvin and they do not even repair these anymore, and offered me a discount on a new replacement combo electronics head...for $337 I can get the whole new amp for $359 ??? What kind of deal is that?

Disappointed with that offer for sure.

Do you have a spare 12AX7 you could use to try replacing the preamp tubes one by one? That's definitely where I'd begin.

Dang. Sad

I'm not an expert, so this is the point where I clean all my switches and sockets with Deoxit and then start looking for cold solder joints.

Since it only happens in Triode mode, I think that switch might be the next thing I'd examine.

Just an update. Pulled the head unit from the amp and Carvin has it now. Really hoping they can do something. It's $85 for the assessment, applied towards the repair.

More than likely a Power Supply or Transformer.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

I am starting to HATE Carvin Audio!

They just emailed me and said they didn't get the tubes!

Damn it I spent 1/2 hour wrapping each tube and put them inside in a separate box to protect them, now they say they don't have them.

I'm screwed, I can't prove anything. I insured the whole thing for $400, but FedEx said they need photos of the box if it was damaged.

This may be the last Carvin Item I ever buy!

Well, after filing with FedEx anyway, Carvin said they will cover the tubes.

This has been a frustrating road to travel for sure.

Trying to work a deal to get the newer model amp head if cost effective. It would then have a 4 year warranty.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm glad you filed. Obviously that got results.

My V16 looks very sad right now...hopefully I can get a good price on an upgraded head for it.

So here's the update on this. At first they said they did not see the issue, but after I gave them the EXACT steps again to reproduce it, they said this may be a time consuming trouble-shoot. I asked for the cost to just replace the head unit with the new upgraded version with the digital reverb. We haggled a little and I have a new unit with warranty coming - Delivered - for $250. I couldn't replace it for that. The cabinet and speaker are in mint condition.

I can't wait to get this back!

FWIW, when I got my new Vintage 16 head, I was surprised that (to my ears) it sounded better than my older Vintage 16 with the spring reverb. And that was with new stock tubes, while my older one had been upgraded to JJ tubes.
I think you'll like the replacement.

Why didn't you just bring it to a local tech? They aren't complicated amps. Just about any amp tech should have been able to trouble shoot the issue, which is most likely a bad component, cold solder joint, or oxidized connection.

I had ONE good tech in the area, who now decided he is only working on vintage Fender amps. No one else around. I'd have had to ship it no matter what.
